![]() Robustly constructed, 5250 terminals weighed roughly 36kg (80 lbs.) The 5250 terminals generated an audible clicking sound as the user typed, similar to the electric typewriters of the era. The term "5250" now refers to the content of the data stream itself few physical 5250 terminals (with their bulky Twinax cables) still exist, although they are still used to provide a "connection of last resort," hard-wired to the host computer. The 5250 data stream definition has been refined over time to include GUI elements like pop-up windowing, check and option boxes, mouse handling, and pull-down menus. ![]() The relationship between the terminal and system was rich: The system sent a data stream containing markup bytes indicating the boundaries of data entry fields, highlighted or colored areas, and indication that the system was busy responding to the last request from the terminal. Similar to the IBM 5250, it is a block-oriented terminal protocol, yet is incompatible with the 5250 standard. It also connected to the later System/36, System/38 and AS/400 systems. Meanwhile, Google is pitching its Bard AI as more of a ‘complementary’ service for its central search function."IBM 5250 was originally a family of terminal devices sold with the IBM System/3, System/32 and System/34 minicomputer systems. DuckDuckGo’s new DuckAssist feature leverages the Bing AI model to answer search queries by summarizing relevant parts of Wikipedia articles, while web browser Brave’s Summarizer uses in-house AI models for the same purpose. Web browsers and generative AI have a natural connection, and experiments at combining the two are on the rise, especially after Microsoft released the Bing AI chatbot. We’re excited for our users to experience generative AI with this release. ![]() Our goal is to use these technologies to give our users new browsing superpowers – reimagining how they learn, create, and research,” Opera product director Joanna Czajka said.”Opera is actively expanding its AI program into AIGC for browser, news, and gaming products through its own solutions and new and existing partnerships. “AIGC is a game-changer for web browsing. Opera describes the new tools as just the first stage of its ‘Browser AI’ strategy, with plans for its own GPT-based browser AI engine in the worst for stage two. Both can offer text suggestions, but ChatSonic can generate images as well. ChatGPT and ChatSonic are also both available for conversations in the browser’s sidebar and can do all of the same tasks as on their respective homepages. The prompts in green will use ChatGPT, and those in purple leverage ChatSonic. ![]() The generative AI tools, what Opera calls ‘AI-generated content, also offer plenty of more idiosyncratic rewrite concepts, like converting an article into a soap opera, sports commentary, or series of quiz questions. Generative OperaĬhatGPT and ChatSonic will condense, expand on, or produce tweet ideas out of any highlighted website text. They can also converse with generative AI chatbots ChatGPT and ChatSonic in the browser’s sidebar. Opera users can see summaries and explanations of website content and generate social media posts based on the text of a website. Web browser platform Opera has introduced generative AI tools to the Opera and Opera GX browsers.
